Gotcha

"I'll sue you if you upload this to Flickr!". I'm pretty sure that's what she said when I clicked her first shot! Of course that was just a jest :-] (Unless, her lawyer calls me now! :-D)

That's Tara, behind the camera, just in case if you're wondering.

After successfully stealing an orange from a passer by, this fellow has to be in alert mode all the time because there are many other monkeys in the area and trouble is never far away.

Got this shot when it gave a curious look while I was pointing my (rather big) lens at it.

At Swayambhunath stupa, Kathmandu, Nepal.

cling-clang-clong

Bells hung and sold as souvenir around Swayambhunath swing with the wind, and make that signature sound - cling-clang-clong.

Been away from Flickr for few days. Good to be back :-]

City of gods

Local people hang out at Patan durbar square early morning as pigeons scour the area to find food.

I had been to a photo frame shop in Kathmandu, when a photo caught my attention. That photo was neatly framed and was showcased. Not able to look away ,I went closer and talked to my friend about the photo's location and composition. It was a really well composed shot. In my mind I was wondering how I had missed to click a similar shot in that location. And then it hit me - I wanted to emulate the photo. It took a month or so.. but finally I was able to capture this shot which is strikingly similar to the one hanging in that frame shop. That's when I thought to myself - thoughts become things!

I think watching and learning is an integral part of growing... and growing fast. Many may criticize and say that this photo is a copy of the photograph from the shop (I still do not know who clicked the original shot though) and that such practice is unethical. Well may be. But, it does not hurt to try and find out what it takes for you to capture the shot yourself. We all watch and learn don't we? I believe it's true that we watch - imitate - learn, and over time ideas, techniques, imagination et al builds up and one fine day we realize that we have developed a style, which is unique to ourselves - we grow up as photographers!

Emulation, if used ethically, can sure bring out the best in us :-]

More magic

More fun with the magic ball. Again, no photoshop re-touch here. The refraction is completely from the glass.

Just realized that I do not have this toy with me anymore! I'm not able to remember when/where I had it last. Uhh! So long...

A boat is rowed towards the shore (possibly) by a staff from Fish Tail Lodge - one of the most exclusive lodges in Pokhara.

There is no other way to get to the lodge other than by boats. You could swim across if you fancy it! :-D

Wikipedia contribution

While writing a short description for this photo of Rajesh Hamal (Nepali actor) I had come across his page on Wikipedia. I found all the info I was looking for on the page, except for one thing - yes, his photo. It was ironic that I was reading information to use on a photo, but the page itself did not have any photo. So I submitted one of his photo, and it has now been uploaded to his page on Wikipedia.

If you see missing images on Wikipedia and would like to contribute then you can send an email to photosubmission@wikimedia.org along with the photo. That's pretty much it - they will get back to you when your photo has been accepted. However, do make sure that you are the owner of the photo and you accept all the terms and conditions here: Creativecomms license.

This was my first such contribution to Wikipedia and it's a fun thing to add to the world's largest free encyclopedia :-]

At the movie set

Saw this lady at the same location where Rajesh Hamal was shooting. I was not sure if she was an actress but asked her if I could take a photo anyways. Without hesitation, she stood there with a pose and a smile. This photo is the result.

Someone later told me that she's a Nepali model, though I'm still not sure about that. Anyone seen her before?

Good morning

Another sunrise shot of mist, water and boats parked on the shores of Phewa lake.

I was trying out different angles and compositions that morning. There is so much scope for photography around the lake. Don't forget to load extra memory cards if and when you decided to visit the place ;-]

The simple life

The simple life, originally uploaded by Digital Monk.

An elderly lady makes her way up a hill after spending the day collecting shrubs in the jungle. The shrubs will be fed to cattle owned by her family.

Came across this woman while hiking towards the World Peace Stupa in Pokhara. Probably in her 70s, she was struggling to lift a (rather heavy) load of shrubs and plants. After helping her get the load on her back, I ran up the hill and waited for her to reach the 'zone' where light had made it's way through the trees. And got this shots moments later. When she finally made it up the hill, I asked her if it was ok that I clicked her photos. Right away she asked for money to have tea. I gave her some change, she said thank you and carried on with a smile. The shot made my day! :-]

This is one of those shots which I have been wanting to click for a long time. Long before taking photographs seriously, I remember seeing these kind of subjects in postcards sold all around Kathmandu valley (and secretly wishing - 'I wanna click shots like those someday'!). And after years of imagining, I've finally got the shot that is more or less similar to what had been playing in my head. Happy days! :-]

To bring together these shots, I've created a set Thoughts become Things!. The set will include all my dream shots which has become a reality after I've imagined it in my head for days, weeks, months and sometimes even years!

Parking space

These boats are used to take visitors for a tranquil ride around Phewa lake during the day. The vibrant colors of these boats are nice eye candies and make pretty photographs :-)

What an aperture of 1.8 does to a photo

Had the pleasure of meeting Tara - a Flickr friend, yesterday. She's in town and we had a real fun evening photowalk in Swyambhunath. Talked about a variety of things, mostly photography and flickr. Good stuff.

We swapped cameras and to say the least, I went bonkers with her 50mm, f/1.8 lens! That lens produces some SERIOUS bokeh!! (see above for proof :-P). Thanks to her for letting me try out her equipment, I'm now convinced that my next lens should be a 50mm f/1.8.

I was clicking shot after shot with the lens and got the image on the left. The bokeh looked amazing but something was missing in the photo. So I asked Tara to place her hand next to the area of focus and click - the shot on the right. Liked both the so much, ended up merging them.

I had tried similar shots with my 70-300mm tele lens before - Feel and Touch. But I like this result much better.

Must must get this lens! :-)
